Discovery Primary Science & Maths
http://primaryscience.ie/awards_16.php In recent weeks the children of Greystones CNS have been proving their mettle when it comes to producing some outstanding work in Science, Maths and ICT. All of this work has been brought together to enter the Discover Primary Science and Maths awards and to look through all that they have done is a testament to the fantastic effort put forth since Sept. We must also recognise the amazing efforts of Ms Hunt to bring this together - as you can see there has been a mammoth amount of work involved and to achieve this standard with such young students is amazing. Well done children! Great job Ms Hunt! You can see their work at the following link http://greystonescnsscience.weebly.com/

Last Friday the children embarked on a mini beast hunt in the lovely grounds of the Rugby Club. Our intrepid explorers searched high and low for a selection of creepy crawlies and managed to unearth slugs, snails and millipedes among others on their list. It really is great to have the run of the entire grounds and as the weather improves we will no doubt be embarking on more nature inspired adventures - starting with Monday 25th April when we have our very own Horticulturalist coming to deliver an inspiring Nature and Biodiversity day to the children. Today was a momentous day in the history of Greystones CNS as the greatest game on Earth was played for the first time. Under the expert and enthusiastic tutelage of Coach Tommy our children began what will hopefully be a life-long love of the most skillful sport there is, or ever was. The children enjoyed getting to try all of the equipment provided to us by our neighbours, Eire Óg GAA, who have also been allowing us to use their fantastic hall for some months now. You can see more of the adventures of our little Cuchulainns at our Gallery and no doubt some future Eire Og and Wicklow GAA stars.
We have been seeing some great ICT lessons of late where the children have been completing some fantastic computer programming using Scratch Jr software. The children love using the interactive whiteboard as well as the tablet to "write their codes". We really have some budding IT experts of the future on our hands at Greystones CNS where we are committed to preparing our children for the future by ensuring high levels of computer literacy. Today we were very excited to begin our block of dance lessons with Kat from the East Coast Academy of Performing Arts. The children were engrossed in their hip-hop dance lesson from start to finish and in fact so were some of our teachers. Respect! You can see more pics at our Gallery.
We were very sad to say goodbye to Blake yesterday at the end of our rugby coaching block provided by Leinster Rugby. Blake has worked excellently with the children this term and they have hugely enjoyed his visits. He also very kindly presented the children and school with some Rugby balls and we then presented him with a small gift as a thank you for his efforts. We wish Blake the very best as he plans his imminent return to New Zealand and also wish him well in his future career.
Today was the day we, and every primary school in the country, had been waiting for to mark the 100th anniversary of the 1916 rising. We were very excited to welcome so many parents and relatives to the school for our ceremony which involved Mina’s Grandad, Michael, proudly reading the proclamation aloud followed by the raising of the tri-colour. This was gifted to us by the Defence Forces back in November and after it was raised all assembled stood quietly for Amhrán na bhFiann. The children then treated all our guests to a fantastic exhibition of Irish dancing expertly led by the talented Ms Hunt, after which the guests went to view our art exhibition and read our “Proclamation for a New Generation” which the children had worked on together. It was a memorable occasion and very fitting for our first cohort of Junior Infants to mark such a momentous occasion. Hopefully, in 100 years’ time the 200th anniversary will be such a success. Well done to all the children and their teachers Ms Hunt, Ms Brennan and Mrs Pappas. You can see more pictures at the Gallery section of our website.
Today was World Book Day and it was quite a sight this morning as the children arrived dressed as their favourite book character. It was great to see Grace O Malley, The Tin man and Little Red Riding Hood among many others saunter into school just before 9. We were also delighted to welcome one of our parents to sit in and read a book for the children this afternoon and the boys and girls were riveted. Many thanks to Louis' Mum for reading us such a wonderful story.
We were delighted to see Aisling today, our specialist teacher from Music Generation Wicklow, who continued her block of lessons with the children. Today she introduced some new instruments to the children much to their enjoyment. Music Generation Wicklow is an exciting education initiative, running low cost music education programmes for children and young people throughout the county. It is part funded by U2 so tip of the cap to Bono and the boys for helping us to access to such great musical experiences.
Today we visited the nearby Civil Defence Training Centre where we learned all about the exciting things the brave members of the Civil Defence do to help keep us safe. As a Community National School we continue to educate the children about the importance of all stakeholders in the community and today was the turn of the brave people who help out when things go wrong. The children were very excited to see the speedboat, the ambulance, the radio room and the mobile command van as well as all of the jeeps. Many thanks to Wicklow Civil Defence for making us all feel so welcome. You can see more pictures at our Gallery.
